Ep. 85: Is you next freelance client on TikTok? (with Chloe Barnes)
Hi friend,
Here’s a question: are you using TikTok to market your freelance business?
I had a phase of getting glued to the For You Page a while back and had to delete the app. Now I’m a past-it millennial who spends too much time on Twitter instead.
But since Twitter is going down the pan, I’ve been reconsidering the clock app. Is it still just teenagers lip-syncing and dancing at each other? Turns out, no.
TikTok is the most popular app in the world right now, with an algorithm that’s so good at predicting user preferences, it might send you a friendly warning to log off and go to sleep. LinkedIn would never.
But is it a good way to find freelance clients?
My guest on today’s episode of 15 Minute Freelancer says yes.
“I don’t find clients – they find me”
Chloe Barnes, freelance copywriter at The Write Chloe (and creator of multiple viral TikToks) uses a TikTok-first marketing strategy for her business.
I won’t link to her account yet or you’ll end up going down a Chloe-shaped rabbit hole on TikTok and forget to come back. (I speak from experience.)
With nearly 20k followers, Chloe posts short daily videos to entertain, educate and build relationships, resulting in a thriving freelance business.
If, like me, you’re a little wary of getting on video, I promise Chloe will change your mind.
On today’s episode, she shares her top tips for navigating the platform and making “real person TV” easy and effective, including:
Why TikTok is different from other social media apps
How she got her first client via TikTok when she had just 29 followers
How you can find clients on TikTok (or help them find you)
How to create content the TikTok algorithm (and potential clients) will love
Spontaneous vs. scheduled content
How TikTok fits in Chloe's wider marketing strategy
