Happy Friday!
"You can't be everyone's cup of tea, or you'd be a mug!" 🤣
This comment has been playing on a loop in my head since I spoke to Advita Patel about being a business rebel.
(Advita is the founder of Comms Rebel, which aims to revolutionise workplace and business culture by encouraging us all to be a bit more rebellious. She's also the co-founder of A Leader Like Me, which is a membership for underrepresented women looking to progress in their careers.)
It’s not always easy to go your own way. Especially when it feels like there are so many Business Rules™️ to follow – and so many people with an opinion on the Right Way To Do It.
(Personally, I’ll never get around to sorting out an SEO strategy for my website, which is embarrassing as a copywriter. But I’ve got this far without one, so 🤷🏻♀️)
I don’t think of myself as a rebel, though. I’m a rule-follower.
Miss a deadline? Skip a workout? Send a Friday newsletter on a Tuesday? Scuse me while I throw up.
That said, these are rules I’ve set for myself.
And as Advita says on today’s episode of 15 Minute Freelancer, if we’ve made the leap to work for ourselves, we’re already firmly in the rebel camp. Go us!
Stepping outside the lines can feel vulnerable. But if you don’t take that leap, no matter how risky it feels, you’ll find yourself:
not putting yourself out there for new (bigger) opportunities
not charging as much as you’d like (or deserve)
not daring to change the services you offer so you’re working in your zone of joy
not pitching yourself as a podcast guest or speaker for that big industry event
holding back from being more visible on social media
not starting conversations with people who could become future clients or collaborators
shoehorning yourself into a business model that was designed for someone else
Advita says it’s normal to worry about how we’ll be perceived when we try to do things differently. But if we want to build a business on our terms or inspire change in our industry, we need to step outside our comfort zone.
You can’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but when you understand your purpose and pursue it with heart and intention, you’ll be on your way to building a thriving business. And you’ll probably inspire a few other folks along the way.
Today’s episode: 70. Unleash your inner rebel (with Advita Patel)
In this conversation, Advita shares her insights on:
How to unleash your inner rebel (especially if you’ve always been encouraged to follow the rules)
Finding the confidence to be more visible and talk about what you do
Celebrating yourself and not waiting for validation from others
Stepping outside your comfort zone to spark the changes you want to see
Small rebellions that could make an impact on your business today.

🧠 Insight: Another thought that struck me as I listened back to this conversation was the importance of being the first mover. Don’t wait for opportunities to come your way. Don’t wait for other people to reach out to you. If you want to meet someone, start something, make a change (big or small) – be bold, be brave, and make the first move.
➡️ 15 Minute Action: If there’s something you’ve been wanting to do differently in your business, but have held back from pulling the trigger, let this episode be the starting gun! What’s a small rebellion you could make today? Don’t overthink it – identify the minimum viable next step and send the email or message that will get the ball rolling.
Hit reply and let me know what your next mini-rebellion is going to be.
Over and out freelancing rebels!
